Mascot Series - Self

The Mascot Series goes deeper than just the surface level. Some people would have assumed that this Mascot Series would be all goofy, cartoon-like characters. "Mascot" is defined as any person, animal, or object used to represent a group with a common identity. Break that down and you quickly come to realize that "WE ARE ALL MASCOTS." Myself included. Which is why this self-portrait is so important. It forced me to take a serious look at myself to analyze what and who am I, as a mascot, representing? Is it something negative, degrading, or self-serving? Heck no. Is it something up-lifting, encouraging, and beneficial to others? I certainly hope so. That's what I want this to be - all of it. From the shoes, clothing, art, and beyond -- it's about making a difference and touching others. That's my goal. That's my mission. Let's do this. #DreamImpossible

WHY or WHY NOT?

I had a 12x12inch gallery wrapped canvas laying around and had a spark to do something with it. Many times, the most powerful and challenging word you could ever say to someone is, "WHY?" Even when I think things through in my head, I often am forced to ask, "WHY?" Why this, or why that? Why would that work, or why would people care? Little would you think that one word can have such power and controversy within it. I'm positive this single word has changed lives, companies, and possibly even nations. But...WHY?

Then a couple of days went by and the piece was sitting in my office/studio. Randomly, I looked at it and asked myself, "Well, if "WHY", then why not "WHY NOT?" And boom. Asking the powerful question "WHY?" quickly became an equally powerful follow-up question, "WHY NOT?"
I'm not sure if I plan to sell this piece or not simply because it's so cool I would like to keep it in my office. However, everything has a price, so if you feel so inclined to have it for yourself, simply contact me.

This is incredible. Watch for yourself. I immediately thought of Corporal Josh Hoffman and the [Fashion Has Heart] project that I recently was able to be a part of when I first saw and heard about this technology. This device and program can change so many lives that may have been emotionally and/or mentally lost.

There is a documentary soon to be released about the LA graffiti artist that was the inspiration for the creators of this eye-writing device, check out the trailer:

Revive x Dr. Romanelli Short Film, Part 1

The Revive boutique in Birmingham, Michigan, teamed up once again with Dr. Romanelli for a series of custom jackets. This time, they created a short story film to highlight the pieces in narration form. This video marks the first within a series of them yet to come.

The videography was done by The Work and features shots down Woodward Ave, Belle Isle, and else where around Detroit.This by far has to be the most elaborate "viral" branding campaign to promote a few jackets that aren't even available to purchase off the rack. Expect much more to come.

Joe Buys Show in LA

If you told me a few years ago that Joe would be performing in Hollywood at the Key Club on Sunset Boulevard, I would have believed you, but at the same time, I would have been like, "Whoa, what??"

Often times we want our dreams to come true, but find them hard to believe that they actually will. Myself included, we assume that our dreams are just too impossible to come true -- almost like we don't want to get our hopes up in fear of failing.

Well, Joe Buys had a show last night in Hollywood at the Key Club on Sunset Boulevard. Dreams do come true. And the dream isn't the final destination like we would assume it would be, the true "dream" is the JOURNEY. Enjoy every minute of it and don't stop.

2012 Super Bowl Teaser Commercial

Volkswagen just released a teaser for their Super Bowl ad campaign coming up rapidly, on February 5th. It takes a few seconds to catch on to what they're "barking," but once you realize it, you'll understand its purpose. Amazing how Super Bowl ads are now being utilized weeks before the actual game.

Another interesting thing to note that the VW 2012 commercial actually coincides with last year's campaign (see below).

Mascot Series - Florida State Seminoles

The 5th piece in the "We Are All Mascots" art series is Florida State University's mascot, Chief Osceola. Through my research before starting this piece, I discovered that FSU has a close relationship with the Seminole Tribe. Florida State makes legitimate efforts to historically and respectfully portray the famous Seminole chief with great pride and honor. With the major controversy surrounding team mascots being racial stereotypes of Native American tribes just a few years ago, I wanted this painting to enable the viewer to decide for him/herself on the issue.

Guerilla Marketing

This was brilliant. A perfect example of guerilla marketing from Nike. Simple, effective, and requires a double-look to process it -- therefore, that means it's being seen and not ignored like the countless other advertisements being blasted in the city. Plus, it attracts attention from gawkers and excites people enough to have them pull out their camera phones and snap pictures to send to friends or share on their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or blog (like I'm currently doing).

Nike Sportswear Moscow Store Art

Nike Sportswear recently launched a new store in Moscow and worked with Moscow-based graphic designer Aske, AKA Sicksystems, to create this Nike duck boot turned wolf face. Mascot Series - Louie the Laker

The fourth installment of the "We Are All Mascots." series of paintings in none other than "Louie the Laker," from my alma mater, Grand Valley State University. Louie was given a grayscale color palette to give an added boost of attitude. It would be awesome to see a real-life monochromatic mascot -- it'd make you feel as if you're in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy goes from black-and-white into a land of color. Imagine that!

Detroit Pistons - Lipstick on a Pig?

Last night was the home opener for the Detroit Pistons, a team which is clearly in the rebuilding stage. With the Lions actually good and back in the NFL Playoffs, Red Wings on top in the NHL, and the Tigers' playoff 2011 season with the league MVP as pitcher, it would seem impossible to get fans excited about a Pistons team predicted to finish at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. So the BIG question going into the shortened, partially locked-out NBA season was (and continues to be), "How the heck do we get fans to come to the game?"

Taking pages from Howard Schultz at Starbucks and Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks, the only chance the Palace has to attract customers is to provide them with an experience worth the price of admission. New team owner, Tom Gores, and the Palace staff knew this first impression would be an important opportunity to build a buzz. So, they pulled as many tricks out as possible. So much so, that it seemed I was attending a concert with an NBA basketball game in between performances.

To begin, the Motown sensation, The Temptations, serenaded the early-arriving fans with their classic hits. A few minutes later, pop-star and Detroit native, Mike Posner, sang the National Anthem. Then, they had flames, fireworks, and the famed Detroit "Selected of God Choir" perform the introductions -- this was all before the game even started.

During a television timeout, the jumbotron showed Ndamukong Suh flexing his Pistons jersey in the upper balcony. After the 1st quarter, the Pistons revealed the new banner to honor their previous owner of 37 years, the late Bill Davidson. At halftime, "headliner" Taio Cruz, performed his multiple international pop hits with a dance team and the high-flying Flight Crew performing in the background. After the third quarter, Kid Rock came out to center court and honored returning service men and women back from their tours of duty.

Intermixed between the "show" was a basketball game that featured two teams predicted to be at the bottom of the league standings. The Pistons lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers by 16 points, 105-89.

Can the experience of being at the game make up for a lackluster game? Can the experience of the product out-perform the actual product itself? Could Starbucks sell this much coffee with their trademarked "third place" environment but by selling dirt-water coffee? My late Grandpa used to say, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but that doesn't make it pretty."

The Pistons organization are doing everything in their power, and the players and coaches are working hard to improve day in and day out. I just hope that is good enough. I hope the experience of going to a game, the sites, sounds, smells, and energy can hold fans over through this rebuilding process. I've grown up supporting my hometown team, and I don't plan on stopping. I hope others can bare with it and do the same.

What Story Do Your Shoes Tell?

This guy is no stranger to shoes having stories behind them. That's what drew me to start custom-designing sneakers in the beginning: the ability to utilize a shoe as the canvas to paint a personal story on. That's why most of the shoes I've created are personally made for that specific person, to tell a story that is significant to them but that may not be to someone else.

What I love about the 1000 Mile Boot is that their story can be, and should be, appreciated by all. It's about the entire 300-step process of making the shoe. The production, the materials, and the people is the story behind this shoe. It encompasses traditional American values of hand-crafted quality goods made by neighbors. This is a trend that seems to have started a post-9/11. I'm not sure if it's American pride or a mixture that people have realized the loss of community and quality by buying products from big-box stores that were made cheaply in factories across the world. Whatever the reason, I love that buying local, mom-and-pop boutique shops, and "quality over quantity," are all coming back "in style."

Louie the Laker, from thee Grand Valley State University.

Yes, I know... this voting process was pretty bias since the majority of respondents were either from the Grand Rapids area and/or went to school with me at GVSU. But, oh well. The public has spoken, and I have heard them. It was a close vote, however. The Oregon Duck lost by only two votes.

See, just like with the U.S. Presidential election, every vote counts. But sorry, no recounts.

My goal is to have Louie complete by the end of the year. Can he do it? Wait, and see...

Corporal Hoffman Series: Behind the Designs

Personally, the meaning behind the designs means more to me than the finished designs themselves. I had the pleasure of trying my best to get to know Josh these past few weeks and months. In doing so, I was able to learn his major interests: driving fast, Ford Mustangs (a white 1994 Mustang to be exact), loud classic rock music (his dog is named after Motley Crew), comedy and playing pranks, Michigan football, "collecting" t-shirts, UFC and mixed martial arts, and in his home is a shadow box of military medals and patches that solidifies him as an "official" hero -- as if that were ever in question.

Before we dive into the meaning behind the designs, I should point out that as of this past Friday (view pictures from the launch party), Josh's designs are available to purchase from Musicskins for your cell phone, laptop, MP3 player, and more. Corporal Hoffman Series - Preview

Corporal Hoffman Series logo patch [Fashion Has Heart]

[Fashion Has Heart] is a Grand-Rapids based nonprofit organization that I've had the pleasure of assisting founder and CEO, Michael Hyacinthe, in building the past 8 months. The mission of [FHH] is to utilize the power of fashion, art, and design to benefit the wounded soldiers that are returning from battle and are trying to integrate back into civilian-life.

The Corporal Hoffman Series has recently developed through working one-on-one with Corporal Josh Hoffman, a U.S. Marine who was shot by a sniper's bullet while on tour in Iraq 4 years ago. The bullet entered his spine and left him paralyzed from the neck down, leaving him unable to speak or eat. He communicates through a unique code that is featured in the designs that will be made in "skins" and t-shirts.

The launch party, where Corporal Josh Hoffman's designs will be revealed, is this Friday, December 9th, from 6PM-9PM at Regal Financial offices: 2687 44th Street, Kentwood, MI.

GR Mini Hoop on ABC's Home Makeover

JustinTymeSports, whom you'll remember I created the logo for not too long ago, was just featured on last night's show of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They had one of their famous wall-mounted basketball hoops as the center point of the young boy's room. The special guest he got to shoot around with: Ray Allen from his favorite Boston Celtics team. Congrats to JustinTymesSports, keep up the great work!

I have a wall-mount hoop they brought over that I still need to find the perfect spot to install. I have a feeling I'll be mounting that soon; I'll let you know when that happens. I wish I had this when I was growing up...

Mascot Series - Duke Blue Devils

For the third installment of the Mascot Series (Sparty was 1st and Raider Red was 2nd), I chose to go with the Duke University Blue Devils. As a mascot, there is only 1 available "look" on their face, and this Blue Devil's look will make you wet your pants. His stare down can take your breath away and make your stomach turn in an instant.

Mascot Series - Texas Tech Red Raiders

For the second installment in the Mascot Series (Sparty was the first), I pulled this one out of left field. I have no connection to Texas Tech University and no one else in my circles do, either. I wanted to challenge and test myself on this piece. What drew me to the Red Raider mascot was his mustache, side burns, huge cowboy hat, details in the jersey, and the shooter hand-signal.

Art: City Series

This mini series of city names features: Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. I painted these about a year ago when I was first developing the pointillism painting technique (which you have previously seen in the Sparty piece). Painted with acrylic paints on canvas art boards, each piece measures 16x20in and can be framed, which means they could make for a great Christmas present.

Baby Sis Success

Two Years Later

A friend of mine writes a blog, and in 2009 wrote a post about the T.WAY custom sneakers. Just today he made me aware that the post he wrote over 2 years ago had a nice comment left on it. Turns out, it was someone I made a pair of shoes for years ago. I'll let him tell the rest of the story...

Gnome Series: Part II

I doubt I could get away with doing just one gnome, so I had to make a couple friends to keep him company. Each one was freehand painted and thus, each is just a little bit different. If you looked close enough, I'm sure you could recognize the subtle differences. The yellow one is actually made on cardboard, so it has a little 3-D effect when you view it in person.

I've always been a fan of Ray and Charles Eames, most notably for their furniture design with Herman Miller. Most people assumed they were brothers, but instead, they were actually a husband and wife team. Their expertise expanded far behind just furniture design. As the title hints at, they were also painters, architects, as well as designers, videographers, and more. They are considered the greatest designers of the 20th Century. It seems there will soon be a documentary released about the duo, and below is the trailer for the film. Enjoy.

Gnome Series: The Beginning

Gnomes are pretty funny creatures, so after a special request from a crazed gnome fan, I thought they deserved a mini-series. And with it being Halloween, it kind of made sense to share with you a preview of "The Gnome Series." This particular gnome is known as the "Forest Gnome." And yes, there are a variety of different types, species, and races of gnomes. Don't laugh. I'm being serious! Last night, Mike Posner made another trip back to Grand Rapids for a show. This time, it was at Grand Valley State University as part of their Homecoming festivities. He put on a great show, not just concert. This was by far his best, and most elaborate performance I've ever seen. He brought with him an entire crew, including a couple DJ's that helped create a full stage presence. It's been fun to watch his continual improvement as an artist and as a professional since 2008.

We were driving the "Sparty: The Mascot" painting that I created for ArtPrize 2010 to its new home and owner in Denver, Colorado. It just so happens to be that the new owner is a Michigan State alum who helped make their basketball program into one of the top in the nation. He won the 2000 National Championship and numerous other awards, accomplishments, etc., too long to list.

During the hustle and bustle of ArtPrize, a Wolverine Company Store quietly opened in downtown Grand Rapids. I stumbled upon it just by walking around town, which is always the best way to discover the hidden gems in the cities you live in or visit, by the way.

The authentic, old-world charm of the shop is what impressed me the most. The gold leaf lettering in the store front window, vintage Steelcase desk and chairs, and reclaimed wood furniture pieces from the early leather and shoe factories blend perfectly with the exposed brick of the building interior.

They had all the best brands WWW has to offer, including Sebago, Wolverine, CAT, Cushe, Merrell, and Hush Puppies. Their Hush Puppies shoes is what impressed me the most. Previously when I thought of Hush Puppies, I immediately thought of Payless. Not anymore. They were very well designed and made from incredible materials. Merrell has stepped up their game, as well.

The 1000 Mile Boot is made from an extremely rare type of leather that is softer and more comfortable than any other leather available. We learned from the store proprietor that the leather comes from the backside of a horse. The reason why it is so limited and costly is because it is illegal to slaughter a horse, so the leather tannery has to wait for the horse to die naturally before they can utilize its hide. (This particular boot is the 721 LTD model)

The beauty of the Wolverine boots is that they can last as long as you can last in them. I've heard over and over again that it is very common for people to have the same pair of boots for 20 or 30+ years. They've been best described as investments rather than purchases. I can now see why.

Speaking of lasting a long time, this vintage Steelcase desk and chair were both taken from the Wolverine factory in Rockford, Mi. There is nothing better than mid-century Steelcase -- it lasts forever!

Old advertisements of the different Wolverine Worldwide brands and photos of the early factory workers and salesmen do very well in sharing the history of the company.

The experience in this boutique-sized shop is worth it in itself to visit. To be greeted by the shop proprietor and feel the history of the shoes is so much different than we've grown accustomed to in the shopping mall and online stores. This is how shopping should be: quality over quantity.

On Wednesday, I attended my first TED event: TEDxDetroit. I've watched dozens, maybe even hundreds of TED videos over the past couple of years, but this was my first live event. From 8AM to 6PM, it was all about expanding knowledge, connecting with like-minded people, and being amazed and getting motivated to go back and make a difference. If you ever have a chance, you need to attend a live event. It is 100-times more effective and powerful than watching the videos online.

I wanted to be sure to take from this event as much back with me as possible, so knew I had to simplify and condense it. I tried to recall from my college days of note-taking, this time in a Moleskin rather than typing away rapidly on a laptop. My goal was to take away at least one key point (or at least a one-line summary) from each speaker.

"Tuxes and Tennies" Event Recap

Friday night was the big fundraiser event for the Humane Society of West Michigan. It took place on the Blue Bridge in Grand Rapids, above the Grand River and underneath over 100 metal monkeys as part of Dale Roger's ArtPrize entry.

(Some photos borrowed from Motley Cat Studio and Grand Rapids Social Diary)Adrienne had the distinct pleasure of wearing a pair of shoes I created 2 or 3 years ago, when I first started in shoes. They were created for a magazine photoshoot for an Atlanta area sneaker magazine, I think. I never really saw much after that from them. Anyways, they've been sitting on a shelf since then and happened to be her size, so... Why not, huh? People loved them! We thought that if she would have worn a cheese hat then she would have looked very similar to Nicki Minaj. They ended up being her magical dancing shoes. True story. She broke it down!You may remember awhile back that I had created 13 pairs of custom Converse All-Stars shoes for the party. Some of them were seen on select people's feet while others were the center pieces of the tables.
With the theme of "Tuxes & Tennies," and the fact that it was a fundraiser, we thought it was fitting to auction off the custom shoe design service.
Little did I know that they would ask me to speak.
They all stood up and chanted, "Speech! Speech! Speech!" Just kidding, they didn't really do that.
All in all, it was a great event and one that I was proud to be a part of. Thanks to all that were involved who helped make it into one we will remember.

They have so many awesome cats, dogs, and rabbits there available to adopt -- it was a miracle I didn't take one or two home with me.

Let's Go for a Trolley Ride - FNO

Last Thursday was Grand Rapid's version of the NYC Fashion's Night Out. This was the second year of the event but my first time attending. FNO had the whole city buzzing within the art/design/fashion circles. I had an early morning ahead of me, so I wasn't able to make my rounds to all of the participating stores, but I did make sure to visit my top picks.Participants were able to trolley-hop from store to store around the Grand Rapids for free, which created a unique experience in itself for many.Our first stop of the night was at A.K. Rikks, an extremely high-end men's and women's boutique. The second stop was at Lamb on Cherry Street. I've driven and walked by this store dozens of times and it has never been open, even during "normal" business hours. So, I was looking forward to finally being able to see what it is they actually sold. They had a bunch of great art + design books, a few pieces of furniture by Blu Dot, and my favorite: moleskin books! I just barely got in the door and snapped this first picture when I was immediately notified by a store worker that photographs were not permitted. Which, I must honestly say, is a rather stupid policy, especially on FNO when people are going out willing to share their store experience much more than they would on a usual shopping trip.

The third stop was to Richard App Gallery, which also happened to be a small pop-up shop for A.K. Rikks. They had it all: art, fashion, and little bites of food.The fourth and final stop was at none other than ACK. Need I say more?All in all, FNO was a great evening for Grand Rapids. It was a good time for the fashion and art people, for local business, and for the continued progression of GR as a whole. As FNO and the fashion industry continues to grow along side of ArtPrize, it may not be long until Grand Rapids really puts itself on the map.

Grand Rapids Speaker Series: Fashion Forum

Last night, Rapid Growth Media put on the Fashion Forum as part of the "Not Your Average Speaker Series" at Wealthy Theatre.

The expert panel included (from left to right) stylist Kev Couture, Marianne Bockheim (Intelligent Beauty, LLC), Tiffany Skilling (The ModeLife), Jim Murray (AK Rikks), and Patrick Plank (Leighs).

Master of Ceremonies, Latesha Lipscomb, directed the panel through the topics of:
- current trends and what to expect in the upcoming seasons,
- the local fashion scene and how it compares to that of the big cities like Chicago and NYC,
- the opportunities for Grand Rapids to excel and grow to become a fashionable city,
- what it takes to survive as a fashion-related business venture,
- the important factors in fashion and ways to utilize staple items to repurpose outfit after outfit,
- and much, much more.

Just a few quick highlights taken from the event:
- Black is the new black. Layer it. Add texture, and possibly a splash of color.
- Fashion is freedom. Individualize fashion to fit your style sensitive to trends, but don't carbon copy.
Tonight is "Fashion's Night Out" in Grand Rapids. NIKE Marty McFly's - COMING SOON?!

Remember the blog post back in August 2010 about the possible rumors of NIKE making the Marty McFly Air Mag? Well, apparently, they were true! Here's what Matt from NiceKicks.com had to say:

[FHH] 9/11 Freedom Exhibit

[Fashion Has Heart] teamed up Fifth-Third Bank to hold a small, week-long exhibit honoring the 10th Anniversary of the 9-11-01. The exhibit features a variety of themed apparel and poster designs, the Flag of Honor, which lists the names of all those who were lost in the terrorist attacks, and the traveling [FHH] Freedom Wall.

The exhibit is open this week only during normal business hours and is located in downtown Grand Rapids at: 111 Lyon Street. Even if you're not a Fifth Third Bank customer, I'd recommend walking through the exhibit to experience the images and information presented which commemorate a historical event that has and will continue to shape our country and its history.

A Grand Valley State University student that hails from Kalamazoo, he wanted to stay connected to his roots, especially while across the globe. In case he ever gets homesick, he can always look down at the streets he grew up on and feel right at home...

Art Requirements:
Shirt colors available are white, black or grey. Please specify when submitting your design.

The maximum number of colors that can be used in each design is TWO. If white ink is necessary for printing (if for instance you request a black or grey T-shirt) that needs to be considered one of the two colors allowable. Each color must be named and created on it’s own layer within the program used to create the design. If unique color matching is requested, please specify using the Pantone Matching System (PMS). We will attempt to match the color as closely as possible. A halftone image is acceptable.

Imprint Areas:
13.5 inches wide x 15 inches high is the MAXIMUM print area with a MINIMUM WIDTH of 6” OR a MINIMUM HEIGHT of 9”.

Digital Requirements:
Files must be submitted in one of the following file formats: .ai, .pdf, .eps or .psd or risk potential file rejection.

Preferred software used to generate file: Adobe Illustrator CS4 or older, Adobe Photoshop CS4 or older, Macromedia Freehand 10 or older and Corel Draw (export files as “ai”).

All text must be converted to outlines.

Artwork created in Photoshop or other paint programs should be manipulated for separation purposes if unique colors are required. If submitted, this file format may be rejected if not set-up properly.

All files should be at 100% and have a resolution of 300 dpi or greater.

Reasons for Rejection of Art:
Design contains too many colors.
Design is too large, too small or too low a resolution.
Design was not submitted in a proper program or format.
Design contains copyrighted material.
Design contains inappropriate content.

Adidas just released this short video about their Originals campaign. Definitely a big 80's and early 90's feel to it with the bold colors and imagery. They live off their classics, that's no doubt.

In reality, this shouldn't be a big deal, at all. But somehow since I've had short hair ALL of my life, it's kinda a big little deal. I've even been to gatherings with family and friends where people didn't even recognize me at first, haha. It's been over two months of not cutting my hair whereas normally, I'd cut it every week. Now, 9 weeks without touching it, I don't know what to do anymore.

I am requesting your assistance on this one...

Hard to believe, but I'm in need of some new business cards. My stock pile is completely empty other than a few laying around in hidden places here and there. It's hard for me to decide by myself, so I'm reaching out for your input.

(Please forgive any "blurry'ness" of the font on the cards - that's just because they're large print-ready files that were needed to be shrunk down to fit the image)
