The 2012 Rose Bowl featured the Oregon Ducks versus the Wisconsin Badgers, with Oregon ultimately quacking to 45-38 win. However, with the premier of two limited-edition Rose Bowl uniforms on each team, it seemed more like a match-up of:
West Coast vs. Midwest,
sexy vs. safe,
flashy vs. classy
futuristic vs. past time
modern vs. traditional,
fashion-forward vs. retro-original,
badass vs. Mommy's boy,
and so on.

At first glance, Wisconsin's uniforms appeared to be their usual white and red. Upon further inspection, however, the watermark outline of red roses popped out from within their "W" logo helmets. A simple and subtle design that quietly reflects Wisconsin's Midwest style.
Oregon won the game, but who won the style battle? Many would immediately jump to say Oregon, but others may argue that OU was overly-decorated and over the top. As witnessed in previous blog posts, Nike takes great personal care of Oregon. With that knowledge, could that have a significant impact in improving Oregon's recruiting chances of top-ranked recruits? What high school kid wouldn't choose this swag gear and having the Nike world headquarters in your backyard over your dad's old jersey?
What are your thoughts? Is Oregon over the top with their uniforms or are the light years ahead of everyone else?

I liked aspects of both. Football is a very traditional game with rich history, so people always like a nod to simplicity and throwbacks.
ReplyDeleteBut at the same time, times are changing and schools are re-thinking the way they dress their players to attract both media attention and star recruits. I'm cool with all the Oregon jersey changes that they go through. Keeps things fresh and interesting. Although I do think the chrome helmet was a bit much. Would've looked better being black with the feathers being mirrored, I think anyway.
