My partner and I were getting ready to leave our office for a meeting downtown. Beforehand, I walked out for a brief second. Once I returned to go back into the office, my partner was already in the process of closing the door. All I could do was yell, "Nooooooo!!! My keys!"
So here we are: no car key or office key, and we had a meeting downtown in 10 minutes! Fortunately, we're not that far from downtown, so we walked the 20-25 minutes to our meeting. Of course, once we finally did arrive we were 15 minutes late and were sweating profusely, but that was the least of our concerns.
After a successful meeting, we had a long, hot and humid walk of shame back to our locked office. Multiple unanswered calls to the landlord, failed attempts to pick the lock, and a bent credit card later, we thought we were out of options.
Then, our MacGyver-creativity kicked in. Frist, we climbed onto the roof. The windows were safety-locked, but you could still open them 6 inches. The gap was just wide enough for us to peak in and see a set of keys sitting on the desk 10-12 feet away.
Unable to reach them, we called upon our Go-Go-Gadget arm, aka: an extra long piece of scrap door trim with three nails we pounded into each corner.
The most difficult obstacle was this long piece of trim that was extremely flexible. I felt as if we were in a game show and had to thread a needle from 15 feet away...
10 minutes later, and after dozens of failed attempts and close calls attempting to catch the key ring onto one of the nails, we finally latched it securely enough to pick the keys up cautiously from the desk. We lifted the severely bending piece of trim up high enough off the desk, now with the added weight of a set of keys on its end, and began slowly to pull it back towards us through the 6 inch gap in the window. Longer story short, we got 'em! If we would have dropped the keys at any point on the floor, we would have been screwed, but in the end, we were victorious!
Instead of winning a new car or dream vacation for completing such a task, our reward was climbing down off the roof and getting back to work inside the office. The taste of success is priceless, even when it's just the small stuff.
